How to Size a Floating Vanity for Your Bathroom
Width, depth and sink count, worked out from the walls you actually have. Includes the clearances we check before we cut a single panel.
Sizing is where most vanity orders go sideways. The cabinet fits the wall on paper, and then the door hits the toilet. This is the sequence we use in the shop before anything is cut.
Step 1: Measure the wall, then subtract
Measure the full wall width at the height the vanity will sit. Then subtract:
- 1 inch minimum on any side that meets a wall, so the counter top can be scribed.
- 18 inches from the vanity edge to the centerline of a toilet (code minimum is 15 inches; 18 feels right).
- 4–6 inches to a door swing or shower glass.
What is left is your maximum cabinet width.
Step 2: Pick a width from what is left
| Available width | Typical choice | Sinks |
|---|---|---|
| 24–30 in | 24 in | Single |
| 30–42 in | 30 or 36 in | Single |
| 42–60 in | 48 in | Single, with drawers |
| 60–72 in | 60 in | Double |
| 72 in and up | 72 or 84 in | Double |
A 60-inch vanity is the smallest we recommend for two sinks. Below that the faucets fight over elbow room.
Step 3: Depth
Standard depth is 20–22 inches. In a tight bath, 18 inches works with a compact sink. We build shallower on request, but under 16 inches you lose real storage and most undermount sinks will not fit.
Step 4: Check the door and drawer swing
Open everything on paper. Drawers need their full depth plus about an inch to clear. Doors need their width. If a drawer bumps the toilet tank, move to a door-and-shelf layout on that side.
Common mistakes we see
- Measuring at the floor instead of at counter height (walls are rarely plumb).
- Forgetting the baseboard sits below a floating vanity, so it does not affect width, but a chunky tile base can.
- Ordering to the exact wall width with zero scribe room.
What to send when you request a quote
- Wall width and ceiling height.
- Location of the drain and supply lines (from the left wall and from the floor).
- Toilet centerline and door swing.
- Preferred width, depth and sink count.
